From Snow White to Harry Potter, England is a favorite filming location for well-known movies. If is seems when sightseeing just about every manor could be scene from Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice, you aren't far off. The National Trust, a non-profit that preserves some of Englands most grand historic mansions, has mapped out historic estates for vacationers to see where some of their favorite films were made. Here are a few that made movie headlines.
Snow White and the Huntsmen
The most recent release of Snow White and the Huntsmen was filmed at Frensham Ponds in Surrey. The ponds were transformed into medieval fishing village for characters like the evil queen, played by Oscar winner Charlize Theron, Kristin Stewart as Snow White, and Chris Thor Hemsworth as the Huntsmen to come to life. As many as 800 people from the production team turned the ponds into a medieval village and provided a set for a fierce battle that burned the village to the ground. Visitors to Frensham Ponds can spend the day on the nature preserve with trails and footpath throughout the park. There is even a cottage on the property that sleeps five.
Harry Potter
It just wouldnt be right for we muggles not to visit the hallowed halls where Harry Potter was filmed. Three National Trust locations were used to shoot the last two Harry Potter films. Lavenham was the setting for Godrics Hollow, once home to the Dumbledore family and Lily and James Potter, who are buried there. The village of Lavenham is largely untouched from its original farming heritage. The timber buildings are a vision into the past. Children will want to find Reamesses, a mummified cat discovered in a house roof, and see how textiles were made in this village that was one of Englands wealthiest.
Hardwick Hall stars as Malfoy Manor in Harry Potter films. Hardwick is known as a childs holiday borebom buster, as there are always interactive activities going on, like dressing up in period costumes, period crafts and nature detective games. Lastly, Freshwater West is the location of the home of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour, and was used for several scenes with Bellatrix and the final resting place of Dobby.
Alice in Wonderland
Its easy to see how Antony manor was the perfect spot for a mad-hatter tea party and the Cheshire cat. Antony manors tightly woven knot garden and 18th century doevecote (pigeon and dove house) , was the perfect setting for the 2009 film, Alice in Wonderland. The grounds are mystical and magical with a maze and topiary garden, where manicured plants come to life in a childs imagination.
Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie
For mystery lovers, London is perfectly poised to raise the hairs on the back of you neck. The National Trust has a number of London film tours including an Alfred Hitchcock walking tour. The Agatha Christie Death by Chocolate Walk features the author's favorite treat with stops in Londons best chocolate shops and visits to private clubs, hotels, film studios and galleries to see artifacts from the novelists home in Devon.
