Flo and the gang will once again bling-out their motorcycles in pink, dress in pink, attach pink phony tails to their helmets, and hit the road to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. The Conga Line will snake across the United States and Canada before ending up in Shell, Wyoming Thursday, July 14 through Sunday, July 17, 2011. This Conga IV ride is a cooperative effort of Americans and Canadians to make a difference and have some fun doing so.
So what is Conga and how did it start? It started with a woman named Flo Fuhr who lived on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. She bought a motorcycle from Donna Palladino (of Ride Like A Pro RLAP) in Florida. Rather than ship it home, Flo decided to ride it the 6,000 miles herself. Unfortunately for Flo she had no navigation skills (she gets lost in parking lots) but when she posted her dream of riding the bike back to Canada on her womens forums, the response was overwhelming. Women across the United States and Canada chimed in and offered to help escort Flo and her new bike home. The result was Flo did not have to ride even one single mile alone. Thus the Conga Line was born. Flo blogged her adventure and drew attention to her ride. In doing so she also raised $1,700 for cancer research in memory of her sister and the instructor who taught her to ride.
The ladies (and some men the ladies call Cabana Boys) had so much fun on that first ride, they decided to do a reunion and to also start the Conga for a Cause. They decided to meet in Wyoming that next year and with their fundraising efforts, the amassed $12,000 for cancer research! The third year the group raised even more money through the sale of decorated bras, auction items, donations from people who want pictures taken with the decorated bikes, and pledges.
Conga IV has already started with a woman named Tamela who left Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, June 18 for a big loop across the southern United States, up the west coast into Canada, across the prairie providences of Canada and then south to Shell. After the meet up with the rest of the Conga crew there, Tamela will ride through the upper plains of the United States, past the Great Lakes (both the U.S. and Canadian sides), and then down the backbone of the Appalachians as she returns to Charlotte. Other riders will be leaving within the next few weeks from points throughout the United States and Canada. On Facebook, many are sharing their plans on the Conga for a Cause page. "The key to budget travel is to plan in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Planning and consuming our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Curbing expending and expenses, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding economizing money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". Items for sale to support the riders and the cause are also for up for bids on this Facebook page.
The schedule of events while at Shell and nearby Greybull include:
- Thursday Pancake breakfast at the Antler Inn followed by a Poker Run through Big Horn Country (think scenic!)
- Friday Daytime riding and demo/training from RLAP (2 hour class for $75 with $25 going to the Conga Cause); ceremonial head shaving; Blingiest Bra Contest; ending up with music, fun, and dancing
- Saturday Auction and dance
- Sunday Church services in downtown Shell or fossil hunting
Wherever you are, watch out for those motorcycles with the bras on the windshields, pink pool noodles, pink boas, and pink feathers and know they are on a Conga for a Cause! Cancer trembles when it hears the Conga is coming!
