Always keeping a budget in mind, its a rare day that I splurge on a tour. Usually tours conjure up images in my mind of over-zealous travelers clad in Hawaiian shirts and toting numerous cameras who take pleasure in contradicting the guide by referencing the many books they have read on the subject in preparation for such a tour. Often I find it preferable to wander around a new city solo rather than en masse, but taking a chance, I signed up for the Underground Tour and was not disappointed. It turns out that Seattle was rebuilt around the end of the 19th century, on top of a Seattle that was being flooded twice daily during high tide. In between tall tales served with a dry sense of humor, the tour guides lead you underground to see the remains of Seattle 1. The underground went through phases as basements for stores, hiding places for illicit activities, and even did a brief stint as homeless shelter. The tour is definitely worth the time if youre into alternative ways of exploring the city- or if your fear of heights prevents you from visiting the Space Needle.
Secondly, if you ever watched the Real World- Seattle season, then you know its a must to watch the throwing of fish at Pike Place market. What more could one ask for than to have a giant slab of raw fish tossed ones way, along with the embarrassing possibility that it might slip through your fingers uncaught? Get ready to place your bets!
