If you will be staying over the weekend in a major city, consider staying in a business hotel to get the best value for your money. As the hotel is geared toward business travelers during the week, rates for weekend stays are often slashed, providing you with the same quality and amenities for less money. You may not have the restaurants and tourist locations right outside your door but it is worth exploring if the hotel is linked to public transportation which would make visiting the tourist attractions a snap.
Here in San Francisco, a standard room at the Hilton San Francisco Downtown/Financial District is running $195 for the weekend of September 24, 2010, compared to $289 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. The Hilton San Francisco Downtown/Financial District is comparable in quality to the Hilton San Francisco Union Square and its location, next to Chinatown, North Beach, and the Embarcadero, is just as convenient for tourists.
The New York Marriott Downtown, located in New York's Financial District, pulls up a rate of $279 for a standard room whereas a room at the New York Marriott Marquis is $399 for that weekend. With a subway station right near the New York Marriott Downtown, getting to anywhere you want to go in New York is easy.
Similarly, the Hyatt Regency Boston is $434 a night whereas the Hyatt Harborside Hotel, a short ferry ride away from downtown Boston, is $309.
Be sure to take into consideration the costs of transportation and the amount of time spent waiting for transportation when looking at hotels off the tourist route.
