What's on the horizon in airport security?

Buying an airline ticket is about to get more personal. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been testing new security equipment and procedures at one terminal at Baltimore Washington International Airport for over a year. The TSA seems pleased with the result and plans to implement them at other airports in the near future. One of those changes will be replacing metal detectors with a whole body image scanner. Despite some privacy concerns, the TSA insists that the scanners make security better, faster, and quieter. So far passengers haven't created enough of an uproar to impede the TSA's planned implementation.

Another change begins on May 15, 2009 when you will have to begin providing your full name to your airline when you book an airline ticket. Beginning on August 15, 2009, airlines and travel companies will have to collect birthdate and gender information for domestic passengers. The date when all these things will be required for passengers on international flights is October 31, 2009.

The TSA encourages travelers to make changes to their frequent flyer cards now to be certain that they match exactly the name listed on the form of identification (passport, driver's license) they intend to use for travel.
