America&#39;s walking city

If you dont know Boston well, theres a good chance that the next time you try to navigate it, youll probably go broke doing so.

Across the board, Boston ranks as one of the most expensive US cities for just plain old gettin around. Parking can cost up to $22.00 an hour for a quick visit downtown, a cross town cab ride can easily set you back a couple of Andrew Jacksons, and if you choose to take the T, just be prepared to pay $2.00 to wait an eternity, since the MBTA recently announced that they will cut back service on all trains and buses to save themselves some money.

So how is a traveler supposed to get around in this pricy town on just the change in his or her pockets? Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you, Boston, Massachusetts: Americas Walking City. Technically speaking, Boston is 89.6 squares miles, but since nearly half of that is under water, unless youve brought your swim trunks, it wont take long to cover a lot of ground.

Consider this: the walk from Fenway Park to the harbor, which most Bostonians would agree quantifies almost all of Boston Proper, takes less than one hour to walk at a casual pace. During this short stroll you can:

1)check out Americas most beloved ballpark
2) view the dirty waters of the Charles River
3) pass through the citys trendiest shopping district and eateries on Newbury Street
4) stroll in (and make way for ducklings!) the oldest public park in the USon the Boston Common
5)view the golden dome of the State House atop Beacon Hill
6)walk through the apex of our city in Government Center
7)high fiveSam Adams (or drink one in any of the many local pubs)
8)breeze on past touristy Faneuil Hall
9)catch a whiff of 6 continents worth of victuals at Quincy Market
10)snap a scenic shot of the Zakim Bridge and the Boston Garden
11) stop in for a canoli in the North End(Modern Pastry, not Mike's!)
12)walk to the end of Hanover Street, take inBoston Harbor, and admire our pretty little Hub of the Universe.

And just imagine the adventures if you veer onto side streets and truly start to investigate on foot. Try doing that much exploring while stuck in an underground tube!

So, as the spring and summer daysgrace usand the bike riders and runners appear on Commonwealth Avenue, take a moment to relish in what a foot-friendly city we live in. And by the time you hail that cab to get four blocks up the street, consider all of the breathtaking sights that mightve moved your soul, had you simply moved your soles.
