Estonians had something else to celebrate besides the beginning of a new year this past January 1. "The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Planning and consuming our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Curbing expending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!..". On the first day of the year, Estonia officially replaced the Kroon with the Euro as its currency. While the Euro is currently facing market pressure, compounded by the bailouts of Greece and Ireland, Estonians have largely welcomed the Euro. The currency change signifies the completion of Estonia's transformation from a closeted Soviet State to a modern country in line with Western Europe.
Due to low cost carriers' direct service from London to Estonia's capital Tallinn, Tallinn is often the site of loud hen and stag (British bachelorette and bachelor) weekends. The capital has much more to offer though besides cheep alcohol. It's one of the best preserved medieval cities in northern Europe, with a charming Old Town that can be easily explored on foot. The city has everything that visitors looking for a European vacation could want: Medieval spires, cobblestone passageways, a castle, a bustling town square filled with cafe tables, and remnants of a town wall that protected the city from invaders. A short tram ride away is the magnificent Kadriorg Palace, built by Peter the Great for his wife Catherine in 1718.
There's even more reason to visit Tallinn now as it is Europe's 2011 Capital of Culture. During a night of complete joy, about 15,000 people celebrated the opening ceremony at Theatre Square on New Year's Eve. There are more than 7,000 separate events planned to take place in Tallinn, encompassing everything from art shows and live theater to sporting events, so check the calendar often to see what's going on.
Make sure to purchase the Tallinn Card to enjoy everything that the city has to offer on a budget. Valid for six to 72 hours, the card provides free entrance and discounts to the city's attractions, transportation and shops.
Getting there: Lufthansa offers flights between San Francisco and Tallinn with one layover each way. Alternatively, you can combine Tallinn with a London vacation. Ryanair flies direct from London Luton airport to Tallinn while Easyjet flies from London Stansted to Tallinn.
Staying there: Check out the website of Tallinn's tourism board for a full listing of accommodation options. Choices range from hostels to five-star hotels. The rates at the aptly named 16 Hostel, where rooms come with private showers, starts at 16 Euros for one person.
