Frommer's, a top authority in travel journalism, released its annual Best Days to Fly calendar a couple of weeks ago. It may be too late to book a flight for the Thanksgiving holiday, but the company has determined theoptimal days to travel domestically for the December holidays. The important to budget travel is to approach ahead. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Organizing and consuming our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel costs!. To make the calendar, Frommer's reporter Sascha Segan and her colleagues talked to Priceline, Hotwire andBing Travel about the best and worstdays to take to the skies.
The average cost of domestic flights this holiday season is about $370, Segan reports. The flight calendar shows that the weekdays prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas are the best days to travel, excluding the eves of the holidays.The fact thatThanksgiving Day, ChristmasDay and New Year's Day are good days toflyis oftenoverlooked by travelers. It makes sense thattheactualholidays have cheaper fares andfewer passengers than surrounding dates, because of course most people plan their travels around being with family on those days. However, if your family doesn't mind breaking with tradition and getting togethera little earlier or a little later, you can fly on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day for cheaper than the days before or after. Of course, stay away from weekends as they always have the most expensive fares.
Segan offers additionalsavings tips for holiday flyers. First of all, she says, remember to pay attention to both your departing andreturning dates.
"Flying on one high-fare day is bad. Flying on two can be positively toxic," Segan writes. "Flying out for Thanksgiving on Wednesday and back on Sunday gives an average fare of $375, according to Bing. But move only your return date one day up to Monday, and your fare just dropped by $35."
Travelerscould also save money byflying to smaller airports rather than major ones in their destination, such as flying into Newark, NJ instead of LaGuardia in New York. As for avoiding delays, Segan suggests flying as early in the day as possible,before lateaircraft arrivals have a chance to add up andaffectairportschedules. Flights before 7:00 a.m. are cheaper than those that depart later.
Segan also suggests trying "opaque airfares," or the name-your-own-price system on sites like Priceline.com if you're making last-minute travel plans. You may be able to book a flight that someone else canceled, for a great deal.
A final tip Segan offered was to embrace getting "bumped" by your airline - taking a later flight -if they overbook your flight. Arrive at the airport early, Segan says, and ask your gate agent if the flight is full. If it is, ask about the airline's reward system for being bumped. They should give you flight vouchers potentially worth hundreds of dollars. Make sure there aren't blackout dates or capacity limits or other restrictions that would make the vouchers hard to redeem. If the perks sound reasonable, ask to be put on the bump list. If you plan on putting yourself on the bump list, Segan suggests taking only carry-on luggage, as your checked luggage could be lost or go on the flight without you. Before volunteering for the bump list, make sure you will be able to get on a later flight and make it to your destination in time for planned festivities.
