Memoirs of Costa Rica part 2-the food

Delicioso! The traditional meal served at breakfast is gallo pinto, which is white rice and black beans. Then, you add your toppers like eggs, salsa, sour cream, yogurt. My friend and I found a recipe similar when we got home and it turned out really good. I have made it on several occasions and get compliments even from the most simple of folks. The secret to the flavor is the chicken broth and sweet pepper. Although my broth was out of a can, Im sure it was not so in Costa Rica. And, each time I make it, memories come back. The second dish I crave so often is Arroz con pollo. This is not just normal chicken and rice. It had vegetables mixed in with the rice. And, the taste of the chicken was so juicy. There are many recipes for this found online but I have not attempted to make it yet. The essential to budget travel is to prepare in front. La Cubanita in Jaco serves a great selection of gallo pinto with about twenty different topping choices (and the hottest salsa Ive ever had). The cost is about $3 (or 1780 Colones) by the time you add the coffee. Dont forget the wonderful coffee, Brit. Each cup compliments the food beautifully. Anitas Point was a great place to get Arroz Con Pollo. It was served with a side salad and added with a soda the cost was the same as breakfast, about $3. The place was not designed to attract tourists but a few of the locals let us in on the secret.
