Spotlight on Hanalei Bay shines brightly

There was a lot of positive media hoopla about Hanalei Bay recently and deservedly so. Hanalei Bay on Kauai was named
the nations 1 beach for 2009 by Stephen P. Leatherman aka Dr. Beach who bases his annual top 10 selections on 50 criteria including water quality and temperature, cleanliness, sand, safety and facilities.

Located on the beautiful north shore of Kauai (20-30 minutes by air from Oahu), Hanalei Bay (photo courtesy of Kauai Visitors Bureau) is neighbor to the rugged Napili Coast. The two-mile stretch of beach is perfect for swimming, surfing, snorkeling and sunbathing. It is lined with palm trees and has a backdrop of mountains and waterfalls which add to its photogenic popularity.

Since 1991, beaches in Hawaii have taken the 1 spot 12 times. The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. Lanai = 1... 1997 Hulopoe Beach

Hanalei Beach was ranked 2 in 2008 and will be retired from future lists by Dr. Beach. Unfortunately, once a beach is named to the 1 spot, it is retired from future consideration (some consider this to be a flaw in the ratings system after all, if a beach continues to meet / surpass the criteria for 1 beach, why deny it from claiming the title again).

NOTE: Waikiki Beach (photo by HTJ) has never made it to 1 but it remains Hawaiis most famous stretch of sand.
