New Mexicans sometimes take for granted the beauty, spectacle and enchantment of our home state. But, this is the time of year when out-of-towners come to revel in what New Mexico has to offer, and home-towners are reminded of the special place in which we live.

As always, theWine Festival was enjoyed last week primarily by NewMexicans. But, nextup on the agenda are the State Fair and Balloon Fiesta, sure to bring in droves from around the state, the country and the world.

The New Mexico State Fair opened last weekend to respectable crowds, and continues through Sept. 26th. This year's schedule, considerate of challenges due to the economy, has the event closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. (In past years, these have been the least-attended Fair days.) Another change this year isno Rapid Ride service. However, ABQ Ride offers bus service, and the Rail Runner offers train service between Albquerque and Santa Fe.

Regular admission to the Fair is $7 for adults (over 13), and $5 for children and seniors. However, for Wednesday only, admission will be $2, along with several other $2 specialson Fair events. Free admission for children under five. The Fair is located at Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds, 300 San Pedro Blvd. NE.

Immediately following the State Fair is the annualAlbuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. One of the most unique and exciting annual events anywhere in the country, this year's Balloon Fiesta will again attract visitors from around the globe.

Most Fiesta details remain the same as in past years, with opening ceremonies and the first Mass Ascension kicking off on Saturday morning, Oct. 2nd, and closing ceremonies on Oct. 10th. The kids will love the Special Shapes Rodeoson Thursday and Friday, Oct. 7th-8th. Evening After Glow fireworks shows also continue this year.

Admission to Balloon Fiesta is $6 for adults (over 12), with children admitted free. General parking is $10 per car. Park 'n Ride tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, and include transportation and Fiesta admission.

Local Chambers, merchants and artists are especially pumped this season, hoping these flagship events will bring recognition and revenue. Abby Maxwell, lead singer of Abby Q& the Dukes and the Abby Maxwell Trio, always looks forward to performing for visitors. "It adds extra energy to our shows," Maxwell said. "They have a completely different perspective, with no preconceived ideas about us. They are able to enjoy their New Mexico experience in a different light. When new people see us and enjoy themselves, it helps us to stay sharp and fresh."

Maxwell and her bands, who made a splash duringBalloon Fiestalast year, will offer a sultry and fun mixof blues, jazz, pop and r&b,at venues around the area throughout the season. Go to their website for dates and locations.

If it's been awhile since you've enjoyed this special season in New Mexico, now is the time. It's hard to find a better bargain for entertainment, food and fun, so whynotinvite a few out-of-town friends and relatives, get out and be enchanted!
