It's often been said that you never tell people your favorite vacation spot for fear that they might actually go. At the risk seeing more tourists in my favorite vacation spot, this article is about budget travel to Hawaii.
Contrary to popular belief, Hawaii is much more than Waikiki Beach, Honolulu and Diamond Head. As a matter of fact, put a few palm trees in Chicago, stand in front of Lake Michigan and you may not notice much of a difference. Oahu is certainly the most well known of the Hawaiian Islands and certainly worth a short visit. Everyone wants to see famous Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. However, once you've done that, it's simply another large city and lots of traffic, noise and people. As a matter of fact, those of us to travel to Hawaii frequently do not even leave the Honolulu Airport. We're there simply to transfer flights to a quieter, more remote location. Such as... Kauai.
Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and also one of the most beautiful. It is known as the garden Isle and certainly lives up to its reputation. The vegetation and scenery are second to none.
When traveling to a remote island, such as Kauai, the most expensive part of your trip will be lodging. To book an ocean view room at the Grand Hyatt, your looking at $4,725 a week. Add breakfast for two and your room rate increases to $6,160 a week. Again, this is for an ocean view, not an ocean front room. However, a savvy traveler will avoid the luxury hotels, tourists and traffic and look for a more quiet, secluded area of the island where you can meet the residents and not other tourists from your own home town. Here's the secret... Upon landing at the Lihue Airport, head straight to the North Shore to the community of Princeville.
Princeville is the gate way to the Na Pali Coast; Hanalei, which is home to Peter, Paul and Mary's fabled 'Puff the magic dragon'; and some of the best vacation deals in the state. Princeville is also the end of the main highway system and as you head East, you'll find charming oceanside villages that are connected by small, one lane bridges.
