Does your mom love to travel? Maybe just dream about travel? If she has a case of wanderlust equal to her love for you, consider these gifts to make her smile and maybe inspire her next trip. You might even want to make a gift basket out of a few of these.
Burton Holmes Travelogues (Genoa Caldwell, ed., Burton Holmes): This gorgeous book is a travel experience in itselftime travel, that is. It's easy to be transported by the lush beauty of these historic photos taken by "the greatest traveler of his time," Burton Holmes (1870 - 1958). Holmes was a jetsetter before there were jets, and he documented his travels through all corners of the world with stories, films and photographs, providing the folks back home with a glimpse of then-unknown places. Anyone who's ever felt a yen for far-off places and the adventure of the unknown will love this book. Find it at local bookstores (cover price is $59.99).
The Travel Book: The crack team at Lonely Planet compiled this condensed encyclopedia of the countries of the world, and made it more fun than the word "encyclopedia" could imply. Vibrant photography is paired with facts, figures and fun notes that your traveling mom might be tempted to adorn with Post-It notes for when she's researching their next trip. The book is something of a gatewayfor each country, there are films and books listed that will give a deeper impression of any given country. It's a coffee table book that you can be engrossed in for hours, and any traveler will come back to it time and time again. The book is priced at $30 for a paperback or $50 for hardback; other related books from Lonely Planet, like The Europe Book, The Africa Book and The Asia Book ($40 each) are also widely available at Twin CIties bookstores.
The Art of Travel (Alain de Botton): A philosophical look at travel that proves that good things come in small packages. It's a slim volume packed with ideas and anecdotes that center on the purpose, meaning and goals of travelwhy do we do it, what do we get out of it, what does it mean to us? Alain de Botton is not navel-gazing or pedantic; he's an engaging writer who, because he's a traveler himself, will speak right to the heart of other travelers. If your mom loves to travel, I'd be willing to bet that she will read this at least a few times over, whether she's on the road or at home in her favorite chair. Cover price is $13.95.
Sigg bottle: Get your mom some Swiss precision without having to buy a budget-busting watch. Sigg bottles are pretty much indestructable, but they're also light because of their aluminum constructionboth factors that make them traveler favorites. If you're concerned about plastics leaching harmful chemicals into your water, Sigg bottles are a great alternative, and they won't corrode if you put juice, energy drinks or soda in them (just don't let anything freeze inside of the bottle). Plus, they come in a lot of cute patterns and colors, so you can find one that perfectly suits mom's taste. Prices range from $18 - $30, depending on size and style. They can be found at a variety of shops throughout the Twin Cities, from Midwest Mountaineering to Whole Foods.
Moleskine: Everyone needs a good travel journal, and nothing but nothing is as smart as the Moleskine. These tidy little books come in enough varieties to satisfy any type of travelerI'm a big fan of their address books ($10.95) and the plain or squared notebooks ($10.95 each). If I were a more ambitious artist, I'd have one of their sketchbooks ($15.95 large, $10.95 small) or watercolor notebooks (same prices as the sketchbooks). The company has also started producing travel editionsessentially a Moleskine notebook with tabs for organizing your notes and city-specific maps thrown in.
Handheld luggage scale: Packing your bags has become even more nerve-wracking these days. Not only do you have to worry about forgotten prescriptions or hairbrushes, there's constant low-grade (or high-grade) anxiety about how much your bag weighs, thanks to the ever-increasing fees for overweight baggage (and the weight limits just seem to keep getting more stringent). Give mom a little peace of mind with this handheld scale from Travelite ($25). Just strap it to your bag, grab on and lifta red light comes on if it's over 50 lbs, and a green light will tell you that you're good to go. It's got an easy-to-see digital read-out and it doubles as a flashlightvery handy indeed.
