Alabama is truly a state filled with surprises. Within easy driving distance we have everything from wooded mountains to white sand beaches. Why spend hours driving to an out-of-state destination when Alabama has so much to offer?

Hopefully this series of "Alabama the Beautiful Bargain" columns will introduce you to many new-to-you places Alabama contains. Consider, too, that when you vacation in Alabama, your dollars stay at work in our state.

The Alabama Tourism Department publishes two booklets each year: the Vacation Guide detailing all there is to see and do in the state's four regions; while the Calendar of Events lists both by date and alphabetically by city every special event taking place. Both can be viewed online or you may request a print copy be mailed to you.

Alabama State Parks are fabulous. From small to enormous, some offer day use and primitive camping while others include modern cabins, cottages, inns, lodges, restaurants, marinas, golf courses, and more. The State Parks' website provides plenty of information about all the parks, plus offers PDF files including one booklet that hits the highlights of all the parks; nine individual park booklets; and another brochure covering rates for cabins, camping, etc. If you prefer, request printed brochures by mail by phoning (800) ALA-PARK or by e-mailing: dcnr.parkspr@dcnr.alabama.gov.

You might also be interested in the VIP (Volunteers-in-the-Park) Program. See the brochure online or request a printed version by calling or e-mailing the contact listed in the previous paragraph. You may also request a VIP application.

Located just off Highway 431 in Delta, Cheaha State Park is the highest point in the state, 2,407 feet above sea level. Opened in 1933, Cheaha also holds the distinction of being the oldest continually operating state park. This Appalachian Mountain foothill region is surrounded by the Talladega National Forest and affords great opportunities for geocaching, mountain biking, hiking, and fishing. Accommodations are plentiful: cabins, chalets, a group lodge, hotel rooms, plus RV and tent campsites. Special packages and rates are frequently available.

In the Lodge, the Cheaha Mountain Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. On weekends a substantial breakfast buffet served. On Saturdays there's also a lunch buffet.

Curvin's, a privately owned stable, offers horseback riding along Cheaha Mountain. Phone: (256) 253-3040 or (256) 310-1938.
