Everyone in the Bay Area knows about it. All of your friends have went. Come late August, we all either rejoice or lament when the city's kookiest residents caravan out of town and return a week later covered in dust--or else we're one of those kooky residents.

What is this epic event that lures away a huge portion of San Francisco the week preceding Labor Day each year? It's none other than Burning Man.

"Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event," says the Burning Man website, "is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind."

Every year, tens of thousands of people from across the world gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to celebrate art, community, radical inclusion, radical self expression, and radical self-reliance. The experimental community that thrives in this extreme environment provides experiences like none other, to say the least.

But enough about the event; if you live in the Bay Area, you're bound to already know what Burning Man is. If you're like San Francisco resident Niharika Hablani, you've been meaning to go for years, but one thing or another has always stopped you. "Next year," says Niharika, who will be missing this year's burn because she doesn't have the vacation hours from work. She has heard about the event from friends, and she expects it to be "insanely beautiful" when she does eventually make it.

If your reason for skipping this year's burn is that you can't afford the damage to your wallet, here's your chance to get a discounted ticket to the event: 2,500 low income tickets are available at $160 each (as opposed to regular-priced tickets which currently cost $300, or $210 if you bought them early, back in January). The essential to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Organizing and expending our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Reducing expending and charges, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind economizing money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, no matter whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel expenses!. The deadline to apply for a low-income ticket is coming up; applications must be postmarked by May 31.

Instructions and the application for a low-income ticket can be found on the 2010 Burning Man Ticket Information page.

Burning Man is all about participation. If you'd like to give back to the event after applying for your low-income ticket, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer directly with the event or with locally based art projects that will be installed on the playa. You can volunteer with this year's Temple of Flux, based in Berkeley. Or check out Syzygryd, "a town square for the collaborative creation of music," currently under construction in Oakland. Now is a great time to get involved!
