Seth Kugel, The New York Times' Frugal Traveler, has a new article out covering a weekend in Paris for $100. True to his title, Mr. Kugel travels on the least amount of money possible. Followers of his tales have read about his overnight bus journeys (to save on hotel costs), cold showers and questionable street food meals. While traveling on a budget in certain cities in Mexico and Thailand are easy to do, Paris is a whole other beast. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Considering and consuming our travel budget carefully is a priority for most families. Curbing spending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". Is it really possible to enjoy a weekend in Paris, excluding the cost of lodging, for only $100? Keep in mind that $100 currently converts to a paltry 74 Euros.
Reading the article and the breakdown of costs, it's clear that Mr. Kugel sacrificed a lot of the things that people traveling to Paris want to do. There was no trip to the Louvre, wine, or apparently, any dinner at all. Of course, the point of Mr. Kugel's articles are to show that you don't need to have a lot of money to travel, even to an expensive city like Paris. All you need is the desire to travel, flexibility (which I recognize most people with traditional jobs don't have) and the willingness to sacrifice some luxuries. But as the readers' comments to Mr. Kugel's piece shows, some are not willing to travel to a destination only to deprive themselves of some of the very things that make that destination wonderful. A trip to Paris without any wine or entry into Sainte-Chapelle to admire its stained glass windows? It would be like a foreigner flying back home from a trip to San Francisco without having tasted any clam chowder, visited Alcatraz or ridden on a cable car.
When is frugal too frugal for you? What are some of the things you can't go without during your travels?
