REVIEW: Hyatt Mission Bay Spa and Marina
Yes, The Hyatt Mission Bay is just as sweet - and maybe even sweeter - than it sounds. After recently undergoing a $65 million renovation, the Hyatt boasts 430 new guestrooms, three swimming pools with a waterslide, a Jacuzzi, a 24-hour gym, an outdoor cabana area, a full-service spa, a restaurant and more.
Phew!
Walking into the resort-style, multiple-building hotel, guests are greeted with a breezy, tropical registration area, complete with fireplaces and leafy accents. Once you check in, youll receive a map (thats right, youll need a map!) to navigate to your room.
The room
The green-and-tropical theme continues in the Hyatts plush rooms. Amenities include internet access ($9.95 per day), flat-screen TVs, an iHome alarm clock radio (totally one of the best inventions ever), plus the basics you expect, like a mini-fridge, hair dryer, safe deposit box, iron and ironing board. Bright and airy, rooms have either an ocean or marina view.
Dining
In such a beautiful location, nestled on a thin piece of land between the Pacific Ocean and nearby marina, there arent many dining options near the Hyatt Mission Bay. And there definitely arent many budget options available. (But chances are, if youve sprung for a stay here, youre prepared to dish a little more out of your wallet for dinner.)
Go for broke: The Hyatts Red Marlin (619-221-4868)
Average price: $50-$55 (three-course meal with one cocktail)
Dine inside, at the indoor-outdoor bar, or on the outdoor terrace. But wherever you dine, expect good service and a menu with a seafood slant. Not in the mood for seafood? No worries. Red Marlin also serves rigatoni, chicken, filet mignon and ribs.
You are broke: Sportsmens Seafood (1617 Quivira Rd. 619-224-3551)
Price: $10-$12 (the house specialty of fish and chips with soda)
Leaving a little to be desired in the way of dcor (think dive bar meets the Moose Lodge), Sportsmens Seafood is definitely not trying to impress anyone. But being the only restaurant off the Hyatt grounds thats within walking distance of the hotel (and open past noon), maybe they dont need to impress anyone. They make the dubious claim of having the best fish n chips in town, but its hard to determine such a boast over four small pieces of fish and a handful of French fries.
In between: SWIM at the Hyatt
Although its undergoing some renovations, the poolside bar and lounge has an 800-gallon tank and a Latino-inspired menu. Highlights include Cuban beef picadillo empanadas, chicken quesadillas, Baja grilled fish tacos and Cuban sandwiches.
Breakfast: Einstein Bros. Bagels
Located just a few steps down the boardwalk, Einstein Bros. is in the Hyatts Provisions Co. general store. Its only open from 6 a.m. to noon, but they do have some darn good coffee.
Odds and ends
Yes, the Hyatt Mission Bay is heavenly. And nearly perfect. The rooms arent as sound proof as youd expect. I could hear (relatively easily) the family next door with a gaggle of children talking through the walls. The key to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Planning and consuming our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Lowering expending and costs, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel costs!. It wasn't so terrible that it kept me up or woke me early, but more sensitive travelers might request a secluded room if possible.
The only other minor item is that while the balcony windows could be covered with a black out curtain, the windows in the beds alcove (in the junior suite) were only covered by wooden blinds. Yes, it's nit-picky, but oh so important to us night owls who don't exactly get up at the crack of dawn and enjoy a pitch black room.
The verdict
If youre looking for a little slice of San Diego all at your fingertips the water, the sand, the seafood and the palm trees, all in the midst of tropical luxury then the Hyatt Mission Bay is definitely worth the trip.
