The Tall Ships have come and gone from Boston Harbor, and when all was said and done, an estimated 3.1 million visitors came toview the spectaclea number that shocked skeptics and supporters alike. This kind of success is hard to imagine when, up until a few weeks ago, Boston officials were not even certain that there would be enough money to host the event at all. Thankfully, after much hemming and hawing (and a $1 million contribution from the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority), Mayor Menino finally agreed to host this 5 day eventminus the costly, but much-loved Parade of Sails.
The finances aligned, the weather was idyllic, and the tourists came in droves. The key to budget travel is to approach in front. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Considering and spending our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Curbing consuming and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!. Not bad, all things considered.
As for the sights and sounds: though they were certainly a bit crowded at peak hours and over the weekend, this was much better than the alternative. On Sunday afternoon, with only a few hours to go until the event was complete, the Argentine ship Libertad had a line of at least 500 persons long, waiting to get a look, and the entire seaport was swarming with people.

Just north, in the Charlestown Navy Yard, lines for the ferry over to the Aquarium were just as long for most of the dayas people moved from viewing the USS Eagle, Blue Nose II (Canada), and Picton Castle (Cook Islands). Street vendors, crew members, and transport services alike were all smiles. For what a flop this event was, in theory, supposed to beit truly seemed to provide a sense of vitality to the city. Everywhere you turned, there were families, couples, and tour groups eating, drinking, and taking in the sights.

Maybe it was just a case of a bunch of New Englanders high on a weekend of much needed sunshine, but regardless, the Tall Ships, and the downright gorgeous weather truly invigorated much of Downtown Boston, and plenty of its visitors as well. Hopefully, city officials have learned a valuable lesson about the value of events like Sail Boston, and the next time the Tall Ships visit, they'll be welcomed and celebrated in proper fashion by all.
