Honolulu ranked 7 for Memorial Day. To go or not to go - that is the question.

Honolulu is the 7 most popular destination for Memorial Day according to Orbitz.com. www.orbitz.com

For most, this will be a three day weekend (May 22 25) and a great time to get away. Anyone considering a getaway to Honolulu, however, may want to consider adding a day or two to their trip.

Im not a travel agent but, I did some research and here is what I found:

Airfare ... The lowest priced flight (45 out of 107 flights) on Orbitz from Los Angeles to Honolulu was $667 + taxes & fees = $705 per person on Alaska Airlines (but on flights operated by American).

Hotel ... I checked several hotel websites for May 21 26 that were in the local newspaper and here are some options:

Marriott Waikiki Beach & Spa rates start at $219 per night. www.marriotthawaii,.com

Aston Hotels & Resorts rates start at $95 per night at various properties and includes a value-added sp
ecial from free parking to free internet and use of the fitness center. www.aston-hotels.com

Aqua Hotels & Resorts rates start from $55 per night at an Aqua Lite hotel and $64 per night at an Aqua Boutique hotel. Some properties offer free daily continental breakfast and free internet. www.aquaresorts.com . Pictured here is the Aqua Waikiki Marina.

OHANA Hotels rates start at $79 per night and include free Wi-Fi and free transport on the Waikiki Trolley. www.ohanahotels.com

Package ... There are many tour wholesalers offering packages but when I checked the Pleasant Holidays website, there were no air / hotel package deals available for this period.

What does this mean for you ... if youre traveling from the West Coast, you it will cost you about$705 per person x 2 = $1410 for airfare. Plus a minimum of $55 per night + taxes x 4 nights for hotel accommodations = $246.32. The total for the most economic air and hotel option is $1,633.92 for 2 plus transportation, meals, tips, incidental costs.

If, however, you were traveling using airline miles, it would be a totally different scenario and your 4 night / 5 day trip could cost as little as $246.32 at the Aqua Waikiki Marina plus expenses.

My recommendation ... When possible, travel during off-peak times / months. Be flexible with travel dates to take advantage of the best bargains. Terrific specials will be offered throughout the year ... like the summer package to Maui from Los Angeles from Pleasant Holidays that starts at $453 for a three-night air inclusive package.

So, keep Hawaii on your travel radar and be on the lookout for the next great deal!
