Its been a busy month of May for me: From spending my 22nd birthday in Dublin and London to finals and college graduation. Now, plane rides number ten and eleven will be christened by flying out to and back from Boston.
This weekend, Im traveling up north to Beantown for my first trip to Massachusetts (Ive been to the state once before with my mom and sister on the way home from our trip to New Hampshire in 2007, but it was a 30-minute stop at the Yankee Candle store). While Southwest has notoriously low flight prices, the airline doesnt offer service in Boston until August 16, 2009. So, I decided to try my luck at Travelocity.
My second choice for cheap airfare was originally Priceline; the company made famous by William Shatner ads giving customers the ability to choose their own price for flights and hotel rooms. While Name Your Own Price can be cost effective, its only convenient if you have travel time to spare: this choice doesnt give customers the ability to choose their departure times and flights might contain layovers. My boyfriend and I have a concert to attend Friday evening, so this option was quickly eliminated. Alternatively, I began comparing a few other travel Web sites for deals to Boston.
Now, traveling from Philadelphia to Boston proved to be more expensive than I originally thought. Most roundtrip airfare averaged around $330 dollars a person for the approximately one and a half hour flight (call me stingy, but I flew roundtrip to Los Angeles for only $250 dollars during Spring Break and that experience has since spoiled me). Bus and train options were still pricey, and driving was undesirable. Subsequent search engine searches proved that a hotel and flight combination package would be the most economical choice for this trip. The essential to budget travel is to approach in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Planning and expending our travel budget carefully is a priority for most families. Reducing spending and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. In terms of low price and a nice hotel, Travelocity offered the best opportunity.
For $416 dollars a person (after taxes and fees), I booked a roundtrip flight to Boston, leaving on Friday and returning Sunday (two of the more expensive days for travel), and two nights at the Holiday Inn. Travelocity listed a number of reasonable departure and return flight times, and abundant hotels in and outside the Boston area. I chose the Holiday Inn Boston at Beacon Hill, which is located within three miles of Logan Airport and normally costs $159.95 dollars a night. Travelocity reviewers gave the hotel a four out of five rating. Slightly less expensive lodging options were also available and some offered services like a free shuttle to and from the airport.
After booking the trip May 23 and creating an account, Travelocity e-mailed me my travel itinerary. Since I leave within 24 hours, I was able to check-in online and print my boarding pass. For a first time site user and first time package booker, Travelocity has been an easy and pleasant experience. Ill include my trip details, fun Boston activities and photos next week. Stay tuned!
