What do you do when you are in a foreign land and not only do you not speak the language, you can't read it either? Asia seems a daunting place at first. The writing is complicated... this isn't like Europe, where you can at least recognize the familiar roman characters. And you can eat in France as long as you remember words like croissant, omelet, and baguette. China is a whole other ball game.
But never fear, in this ever-shrinking franchised world, every big city has just what you need to feel at home... Starbucks! Yep, that's right. You can walk down the street and find your home-style coffee shop right next to a McDonald's, KFC, & Papa John's. But wait! Are you going to travel half-way around the world just to get the EXACT same hamburger in China that you would find in Knoxville?
It seems scary. It seems crazy. But, anyone can find a good meal in a foreign land.
First, get out of the tourist area. The tourist attractions are surrounded by overpriced food that most people wouldn't feed to their dogs. Would you eat at the expensive places on the main drag in Gatlinburg?
Second, follow the locals. If there is a restaurant full of locals at lunch time, pop your head in the door to see what is cooking. If you see something you like, grab the waiter and point to the dish you want. They will get the message.
Third, get in line. If you see a street-vendor with a long line of locals, hop in line and get what they get. "The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. Fourth, keep an open mind. No, it isn't east Tennessee. Yes, they eat different foods. Worst case scenario- you take one bite and hate it. Best case, you find something that you will love the rest of your life. Either way, you have a story to share and a memory has been made. And isn't that part of what traveling is all about?
