The evolution of the hotel industry and the globalization of the hospitality industry in general have created a whole new sector of ethical dilemmas. The globalization situation of a company gives rise to the need to be sure not to say one thing and do another. A perfect example would be a hotel in any location which is having drought conditions severe enough to warrant water conservation, not notifying the guests of this need and not participating in the conservation effort. The customers, consumers or guests would find this situation unpleasant, but at the same time be more dissatisfied when not informed of the need. As members of the community hotels have the duty to take on these challenges when being host to visitors regardless of the location. Hotels are using the resources of the city or country and it isimportant to inform the guests of the property of the situation making them aware so they can do what they can to decrease the impact. Situations that compare to this one are becoming more and moreof issues for hospitality companies, as newer leaps toward corporate social responsibility policies or green policies arise. Greenwashing, as it iscalled, is becoming a real ethical problem. So many hotel companies are saying one thing and doing something else, they are not being truthful. This kind of deception may result in an array of unfortunate possibilities, from bad publicity to permanent career damage. If a company is misrepresenting its intentions, there could be very unfavorable consequences for that company.

As more of these hotel companies work internationally, understanding ethical issues across borders becomes increasingly more important. There are several differentethical variables that become apparent when companies do business outside of the United States. In some countries giving gifts are a part of the everyday routine of doing business and is expected. In other countries, the same practice of giving gifts would be disapproved and thought as crossing ethical lines. To be more aware of these obstacles hotel companies can visit websites for country information at a persons fingertips, or use consultants that are familiar and have experience with a particular country. There isalso the option of tourist boards being a resource for those wishing to understanding international ethics. The understanding of different cultures is going to be the first step in building strong associations with businesses in varying countries by showing respect and understanding and cultural competence. Proper etiquette and customs must be adhered to when dealing with other countries, these etiquette questions include proper greetings, dress and address. Hotel companies need to also understand what subjects can be openly discussed with guests and in the presence of whom. There isa high degree of importance in knowing who to discuss rates to and in front of whom to avoid conflicts of interest and the wrongful disclosure of certain types of information. It isup to the hotel company to make sure that all employees are aware of local laws, customs and protocol. An example is guests asking to be taken to red-light areas, which are areas of the city or country where it islegal to solicit prostitution. It ispertinent for hotel companies to have protocols and policies in place to deal with such requests.

Todays hotel companies find themselves facing more ethical situations than ever before due to current economic conditions as well. An example would be threatening cancellation or other retribution if a supplier fails to accept a lower price. Who is to say that there isanything wrong with going to a facility, explaining the situation and thenrenegotiating a contract or pricing. Most of todays businesses are going to understand, but if the hotel goes on making threats it could backfire. "The key to budget travel is to approach in advance. Economic bullying, whichever way a company looks at it, is a bad idea. Even if the hotel follows through with its threats there will be cancellation fees or something similar plus whatever fees the new facility would charge. Everyone involved from the guest to the CEO to suppliers are basically involved with the matter of money, all groups present need to work together to come up with creative cost solutions. This creative cost solution does not mean creative costing. Ethical dilemmas arise and lines are crossed when creative costing is involved. An example would be billing extra expenses and corporate travel that do not exist or setting up fictitious accounts to meet tax requirements while in reality leisure activities are involved.

Often companies are playing loosely with good business practices during these uncertain economic times, and these companies are working one group against another and theirown self interest. Hotel companies can work to prevent and protect themselves by putting in place policies and procedures and having employees agree to the terms therein. Each hotel company needs to create its own, unique code of ethics and every single policy and procedure should be reviewed by legal counsel to make sure they are within the law. Having these clear hotel company policies and procedures will help to guard against ethical issues. After an event of ethical importance, hotels should take the opportunity to discuss and review these new ethical issues formally and determine a most ethical way to handle these events in the future. These ideas should be accessible to all employees for future reference. Of course there are so many new and emerging ethical issues, hotels will have a difficult time anticipating every possible misstep.

There are scenarios everyday of how hotels have to bend to foreign will. The Chinese government, for example, ordered hotels in their country to install software, so the Chinese Government could monitor all internet activity of the guests. Most red blooded Americans will ask why American companies dont put their foot down and not bend their ethical conduct to Chinas will. Then again it is good to remember that this is the hospitality industry and just because an issue is frowned upon in this country are not in China, and this is how China operates. If any company decides to build a hotel in a foreign country, it is only right to abide their social mores and laws, the foreign country did not make the company or force the company to build the hotel in that country or location. Can any hotel company survive and operate in an environment counter to its own ethical culture?
