After flying to your destination and walking up to the car rental desk to pick up your Pontiac G5 you are offered a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) policy for $10 per day. You decline the coverage, knowing that between your personal auto collision coverage and your credit card's supplemental car rental coverage - you're covered.
Don't be so sure.
What if someone backs into your car, creating a couple of cosmetic scratches? Like a good customer you call the police and your insurance company. The key to budget travel is to plan onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our thoughts. Arranging and consuming our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Lowering expending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!. Reports are taken, claims are filed, and what a relief. Until, that is, a year-and-a-half passes and you receive a threatening letter and a bill from the car rental company's agent for $475.
Uh oh.
You contact your credit card company, who puts you in touch with their supplemental coverage carrier. They send you a fat envelope containing a request for the following:
Copy of credit card statement on which the rental was charged
Copy of the rental car agreement
Copy of the police report
Copy of the declarations page from your auto insurance policy
Proof of payment or denial from all other insurers
Copy of repair bill or estimate of damages.
A completed claim form.
Meanwhile, you determine that because the damage amount was less than your deductible your insurance company never pursued a claim against the other party's insurance, so there is no proof of payment or denial.
You pursue that claim, and you are told a police report is needed. The insurance company can order one, but it might take three weeks. You order the police report at a cost of $10. Where have we heard that amount before?
You receive an even more threatening letter and you pay the $475.
Meanwhile, you hear of a similar car rental experience in which a claim against a credit card company's supplemental insurance was denied. Why?
It was not filed within one year of the loss.
Perhaps next time I will consider paying the extra $10 a day for CDW at the rental counter.
