Located about as far north as one can get in the great state of Michigan is a Great Motorcycle Road the Covered Drive.
Following US-41 up through the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Covered Drive is an 18-mile segment of the Copper Country Trail National Scenic Byway.
Copper Country Trail begins as one rides north out of Houghton and crosses the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and into Hancock. The lift bridge is the heaviest vertical lift bridge in the world. The byway then continues further north through a region rich in copper mining history and filled with the natural beauty of this remote section of Michigan before ending at Copper Harbor. Just a few short miles in any direction are the deep blue waters of Lake Superior.
As one nears the northern most portion of the highway, the trees close in on the pavement (many as close as three feet away) and, during the summer and fall, the branches and leaves form a canopy over the highway, covering the road surface with a soft shade and earning the name Covered Drive.
Two other must see places at the end of Covered Drive are the sign at the beginning of US-41 and Brockway Mountain Drive.
US-41 travels 1990 miles from just outside of Copper Harbor, through eight states (Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida), before ending in Miami, Florida. Anyone traveling from anywhere west of the Alleghenies to Florida by car has either followed this highway for part of the way or crisscrossed it dozens of times on the way south.
With an elevation of 1337, Brockway Mountain is one of the highest points in all of Michigan. Taking Brockway Mountain Drive to the top of mountain is not the challenge one would expect. The big challenge for this road is not the switchbacks, there are none, but by navigating the rough surface of the road. Given the extreme winters this area has, the poor quality of the this road can be overlooked as one enjoys looking out over the dense trees of Covered Drive (with an occasional peek of the highway now and then) and the beautiful blue Copper Harbor waters of Lake Superior.
For motorcyclists, the best time to visit is probably summer. Winter is reserved for snowmobiles and autumn will see roads slow with leaf-peepers.
