The Twin Cities are home to more than 300 parks and open green space. Running and walking paths total a combined length of over 200 miles, with choice scenery of lakes, rivers, and the natural environment. Residents and visitors alike, flock to these parks on sunny days to enjoy themselves. There are many activities to choose from in each park, but you can never go wrong with a walk. A great resource for hiking and walking enthusiasts is Moon Take a Hike Minneapolis and St. Paul, by Jake Kulju. In the first chapter Jake highlights six of the best hikes in Minneapolis:

  • Nicollet and Bloom Islands- Nicollet Island connects downtown to historic northeast Minneapolis. Here you can view the fist dam built on the Mississippi in 1858. You will also see historic architecture dating from 1860s to 1890s, and the Nicollet Island Pavilion built in 1893.

  • Saint Anthony Falls Heritage Trail and Pillsbury Islands Jake suggests starting at Mill Ruins Park and walk across the Stone Arch Bridge, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. From there you will have the best view of St. Anthony Falls and can continue to Father Hennepin Bluffs.

  • East River Flats to Old Wagon Road Trail Just below the University of Minneapolis is this 26-acre park with a sand beach. This is a popular area for recreational activities. Walk all the way to Meeker Island Lock and Dam.

  • Lake Harriet Famous for its bandstand that hosts fantastic and free local music all summer long. Go for a walk around the lake and enjoy some music, and check out the Lyndale Park Gardens that border the northeast shores.

  • Minnehaha Creek from Lake Harriet to Minnehaha Falls A beautiful tree-lined path along the creek stays cool even on the hottest day. The distance is 5 miles one way.

  • Minnehaha Falls This 53-foot waterfall draws thousands of visitors annually and is part of a 193-acre park. There are many walking and hiking trails throughout. The key to budget travel is to approach in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Arranging and consuming our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Lowering consuming and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!.

I highly suggest Jake Kuljus book, which is a perfect resource for exploring the green areas and parks of the Twin Cities. Happy hiking!
