However, it is well worth the effort for the benefits to come. The application process is quite involved. Consider several things before you apply with an organization: the length of study, desired country, the school calendar, and the student year (most programs limit to ages 15-18). Some countries have longer school years and may start in January instead of August or September. For instance, French high schools or lyces have the same school year nationwide instead of differing from state-to-state or county-to-county in the United States. Katey Archer, who is a junior at Cosby High School in Midlothian, Virginia, elected to attend the entire school year in France, which started the last week in August 2010 and will end July 1, 2011. Chesterfield County would not commit to what high school credit Katey will be awarded for her school year abroad until after she returns with her transcripts and for that reason, she decided her junior year abroad was the best choice for her to graduate with her class of 2012.
Some organizations allow the student to study for as little as a three-month stay. If this is the case, consider a language immersion program during the summer. Lengths of stay may be for as few as two weeks and the concentration will be purely on the language instead of all areas of study. There are many institutes that offer this type of program and there are either no or minimal application fees comparative to high school abroad programs. A number of organizations concentrate on the spoken language, while others incorporate the writing, spelling, and grammar into their curriculum. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Planning and consuming our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Minimizing expending and charges, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". This option is great for students that may want to rapidly enhance their fluency of the language and still gain from their stay in the country and culture. This plan of action is very intensive with the child attending four to six hours a day total immersion and four to five days per week or more. Host families are also available if this option. Since many schools take students of all ages into their immersion programs, another option may be a parent who wants to attend with their child.
Not all high school abroad programs have the same application process, but there are many similarities; most, if not all have sizable application fees. Some keep a portion of the fee if the student is not accepted into their program. Katey applied early to her program and was able to apply the entire application fee toward the program fees.
In addition to the fee and basic application with student and parent identifying information, the following items may need to be submitted with the application:
- Student essay
- Letter from parent
- Teacher recommendation letter
- Official school transcripts
- Scholarship application (some organizations have a limited amount of partial scholarships available)
- Medical examination and vaccination records
- In-person student interview by a local representative of the organization
- Telephone interview with the parent
Remember to carefully compare the organizations before you apply. Katey decided on Greenheart Travel, Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI) http://www.cci-exchange.com/travelabroad/index.aspx.
