It seems that all of the advice out there for how not to get robbed while traveling consists of the same versions of things one would do to avoid robbery in the United States: dont walk around at night, dont travel alone, stay on main streets, avoid sketchy parts of town, try not to get too intoxicated, etc. These are all good practices but unfortunately out of the country they arent always sufficient. In Quito, the guidebooks will warn you to be especially on guard in the Mariscal, which is the touristy new part of town. However, they give fewer warnings with regards to the old town. As a result, a friend and I made the incorrect assumption that walking from Parque Ejido to lunch via 6 De Deciembre Avenue (a main street old town), together, during the day, totally sober, and with other people around, would equal relative safety. Unfortunately this was an inaccurate assumption- within minutes of the journey two men ran up from behind, grabbed us, and ripped my friends camera from around her neck, leaving a nasty bruise. Id like to say we reacted well, but in reality, we just screamed and then cried a lot. Bystanders didnt even bother to glance in our direction. Without venturing into the land of the paranoid, this incident serves as a reminder that thieves are more daring than originally thought. Since the incident, Ive carried a small backpack on my back but underneath a jacket. Sure, it makes one look a little like the hunchback of Notre Dame, but the opposite (backpack in front) is equally awkward and makes you look like pregnant tourist. I also wear my camera on a cord in front and tie an additional string from the camera to a belt loop and then tuck that under my jacket as well. The essential to budget travel is to approach ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Organizing and consuming our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Curbing expending and expenses, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!. If all else fails and both things were cut or ripped off, I keep a little extra money in my sock (I have a money belt too, but that just seems obvious). Paranoid much? Maybe a little, but you just never know.
