The government's inability to agree on anything provides one benefit to travelers: cheaper air tickets. Since Congress has not been able to make a decision regarding the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) budget, several federal taxes on air tickets expired after midnight on Friday. Virgin America, based in San Francisco International from which it flies out of hip Terminal 2, is passing on the savings to you by not adding to the cost of the base tickets.
Book by the end of today, July 23, for a flight (excluding Sunday) from August 23 through November 16. They are advertising that a flight from/to San Francisco to/from Los Angeles is $73.49 each way. When I did a search for a flight departing August 23 and returning August 25 however, the cost was actually lower at $55 each way, for a total of $123.76 including everything. They beat Southwest's total fare of $140.
The taxes not being collected are an excise tax of $3.70 per takeoff and landing, a 7.5 percent ticket tax and other fees, which totals $32 for a $240 round-trip ticket with one stop each way. Sadly most of the other airlines are not being as kind to consumers as Virgin America. Instead of letting consumers keep the money that they would've spent on the federal taxes, they're raising the base ticket cost so it's ends up as extra revenue for them. According to the Associated Press, American Airlines, US Airways and JetBlue have raised taxes to offset any savings. "The essential to budget travel is to prepare in front. Southwest and AirTran are taking the middle road, they've raised the base cost of a ticket by $8, which can be less than what the consumer would've paid for the taxes.
So take advantage of the savings and book a flight with Virgin America today. It's unclear what they'll do regarding the taxes after midnight tonight.
