Denver is not known for its coasts. Cherry Creek and the Platte River are not known for their great beaches, though Confluence Parks sunny steps are a great substitute. At the meeting of the Platte River and Cherry Creek near downtown Denver, this park is a large quiet space surrounded by the city. Its a popular area to visit.
The park is bordered by the flagship REI store to the west and large lawn areas to the east. This store, once the power plant for the Denver Tramway Company, has a Starbucks for the thirsty traveler and equipment for nearly any outside adventure for the active. Outside the store is a B Cycle station, allowing riders to rent bicycles for a ride on the bike paths that crisscross the area. Renting a bicycle is as simple as swiping a credit card and lifting the bike from the rack.
For those more interested in the water than the bike paths, there are steps down to the rivers, and folks do cool off in the water, although not everyone would consider that prudent. There is also a water chute that kayaks can run in the rapids under the bridge.
The Platte Valley trolley runs every half hour on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the summer along the river. At $4 for adults and $2 for kids, catch the trolley near the REI store and ride down to Invesco at Mile Hi while listening to the operators from the Denver Rail Heritage Society talk about the citys history. The Breezer trolley is the last remaining car from the 250 trolley cars that served Denver for 40 years.
Denver grew up on the banks of Cherry Creek, and the early prospectors were advised by the local Native Americans to move the settlement to the east to avoid periodic floods. After the settlement was washed out, the community moved the town and established Denver. Denver Story Trek features MP3 audio files that describe places along the rivers as well as other areas of the city. Walking through the area, there are signs along the bike path to orient travelers with the history of the area, including the gold rush, mining camps, and the Buffalo Soldiers. Bring a picnic lunch, a blanket, the kids and the dog and enjoy the park.
Getting there: Take I-25 to exit 211, 23rd Avenue. Travel east to Water Street and continue onto Platte Street. Park in the REI lot.
