If you're a fisherman or waterbug, you likely know LaGrange, Georgia because of its proximity to 26,000-acre West Point Lake which spreads across the state line between Alabama and Georgia. Swim beaches at Earl Cook and Yellow Jacket Creek Recreation Areas are perfect spots to spend a summer day, and at $4 a carload admission, they're the first of many penny-wise area attractions. Located about an hour southwest of Atlanta and 2.5 hours southeast of Birmingham, LaGrange offers a ton of entertainment at bargain-hunter prices.
July 4 starts with downtown LaGrange's 10-11:30am Sweet Land of Liberty Parade, packed with kids riding bikes, pulling wagons, and having a blast; it's totally kid-safe - no motorized vehicles can participate. Next comes live music and fun beginning at 4pm at Pyne Road Park with a children's area from 4-7pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at nightfall. Admission is $10 per car, so pack up the family and join the fun!
The month of July brings "The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)" to the Black Box Theatre, a hysterically funny production performed by the Lafayette Theatre Company. Tickets are $20 adults, $10 students.
One of the coolest Christian attractions on the planet is located in LaGrange: the Explorations in Antiquity Center, an interactive museum of life in Biblical lands, with life-size archaeological reconstructions of real discoveries, a first century village, and much more. Kids will love becoming archaeologists in the Kids' Dig and shepherds during the bread-making experience. It's entertaining and educational for all ages. Admission varies per activity; a tour of the Archaeological Gardens is $10 per adult; $6 for children 4-12.
Hills and Dales is the historic 35-acre estate of textile magnate Fuller Callaway Sr. highlighted by a stunning 1916 Italianate mansion and the renowned early 19th century Ferrell Gardens. Tour the gardens for $8, adults; $4, age 7-college (with ID); FREE, age 6 and under. See both house and gardens for $15, adults; $7, age 7-college (with ID). Children under age 7 are not allowed inside the house.
Your dollars will go far with all of LaGrange's budget-conscious attractions. Two other noteworthies: Bellevue, an 1853 Greek revival mansion, formerly home to U.S. Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill; and the FREE admission LaGrange Art Museum, housed in a lovely three-story Victorian structure and presenting fun programs for families every Saturday. Consider, too, the Carmike Theater on Main Street, offering $1 kids' movies at 10am every Thursday morning all summer; and the Legacy Museum on Main, which charges no admission (donations accepted and greatly appreciated) and houses permanent and changing galleries depicting the lives and events that shaped this region. "The key to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Considering and spending our travel budget correctly is a concern for most families. Reducing expending and charges, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding saving money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal funds is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". July begins a new exhibit entitled: "Southern Roots: Southern Music Traditions."
Neighboring Hogansville hosts 4 weeks of the West Georgia Idol contest in the historic Hogansville Amphitheater on Main Street. The first night of the event begins at 6pm on Saturday, July 9, with admission $5 per person. You're sure to hear plenty of good (and probably some not-so-good) performances; and no doubt you'll get your $5's worth!
What about exploring some wild country? Wild Animal Safari in nearby Pine Mountain is 500 drive-through acres filled with exotic animals. You can take your own vehicle (at your own risk - some animals want to get really up close and personal), rent a Zebra Van, or ride with a group in the park's Zebra Bus. Species include the giraffe, bison, elk, camel, zebra, tiger, lion, bear, alligator, rhino, monkey, kangaroo, and more. No worries - there's a walkabout area with enclosures for the less people-friendly creatures. Admission is $17.95, adults; $14.95, senior adults; and children 3-12, and FREE, children 2 and under. Stop by the Pine Mountain Welcome Center to pick up a $2 off coupon.
Shopping spots are plentiful in LaGrange. Of particular note is the 233,000 square foot LaGrange Mall with a 4th of July Sidewalk Sale going on July 1-4, guaranteeing deals galore. Anchor stores include J. C. Penney and Belk.
Dining spots range from locally owned cafes to familiar chains like Cracker Barrel and IHOP. Equally diverse is the variety and price range. Bull Street Grill serves up a good low-cost breakfast and $5 daily lunch specials. Fried Tomato Buffet on Commerce Avenue offers a great selection for under $10 per person. Popular and budget-minded barbecue spots: Country's Barbecue on Vernon Street and Hog Heaven on West Point Road.
Where to stay? Pine Mountain RV Resort not only has great campsites for RVs, but also features cabins and Airstream campers for rent, along with their very popular yurts. What's a yurt? It's an upscale tent with fabric walls reinforced with wood lattice; wooden floors; heat and air; and real house furniture. No cots, no sleeping bags; it has real cushy beds. Yes, you do have to take a short walk to reach the shower and rest room facilities, but the price is more than right: a 16-foot yurt that sleeps four goes for $37.95 a night; a 20-foot (sleeps 6) is $42.95; and a 24-foot (sleeps 8) is $54.95. Add to that a swimming pool, game room, fitness center, playground, resort-wide wi-fi, and even concierge service and you still have only an inkling of all this resort's amenities.
Chain motels like Baymont, Country Inn and Suites, and Hampton are plentiful. You might also like Thyme Away B&B on Greenville Street, welcoming guests year-round and including a full gourmet breakfast with every stay: (706) 885-9625.
