The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) launches on Saturday, October 17, 2009 and marks the 45th annual racing of the world's largest two-day rowing event.

This two-day regatta hosts over 8,800 athletes from around the world, and attracts up to 300,000 spectators annually.

The weekend is jam-packed with action: the mornings start early in Cambridge (and Boston) and the events last all day: beginning at 7:45 am on Saturday, October 17 and finishing around 5:00pm on Sunday, October 18.

Check out the Full Events Schedule here.

Getting Around

Though it isn't too hard to find the Charles River (especially with the majority of the city and visitors flocking to it this weekend) bringing a map of the river is never a bad idea. You may also want to check out the HOCR's "Getting Around" page if you need help using the MBTA (the "T" if you don't want to get laughed at) or driving (bad idea!) to the event.

Things to Do

If you're worried about keeping busy at the event, there's plenty to do between heats as well. This year the HOCR boasts the 7th Annual Reunion Village tent, a Rowing and Fitness Expo, and two new Food Courts!

Perhaps the most fun, however, is just walking along the Charles sampling local vendors that hawk everything from kettlecorn, to candy apples, to New England clam chowder. The essential to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Considering and spending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Minimizing consuming and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding saving money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!. There are plenty of free samples, raffles, and giveaways that all ages will enjoy.

So bring a blanket, some binoculars, (a little bit of pocket money)and enjoy!
