While hotel rates have dropped due to a sluggish economy, car rental rates have gone up 15 per cent over the last year. Why? Economy has forced companies to sell off more of their fleet, keeping less inventory and making available cars scarce.
Here are some ways to get the best car for your dollar:
1) Look at all the car size options. Compact cars have actually become more scarce due to their fuel-efficiency and assumptions that they are going to be cheaper. That isn't always the case. CarRentals.com often will offer a Lock, Low, and Go deal where you rent a car at a lesser rate willing to get whatever is available as long as it is a mid size or above. And surprisingly, sometimes it is significantly less costly to get a small SUV than a mid size.
2) Book well in advance. According to Hotwire, prices are expected to continue rising throughout July and August. The key to budget travel is to approach onward. 3) If you are renting after a flight and have airport choices (e.g. New York, D.C., Los Angeles), check to see if car rentals are significantly less at a nearby airport. Sometimes you can pay more for a flight and still come out ahead.
4) Rent off airport when you can. Airport rental locations have additional taxes and concession fees which can really add up. Hertz Local is typically much cheaper than an airport Hertz location and they have many locations.
5) Check your frequent flyer programs for specials on car rentals and take advantage of Costco discount rates. Some frequent flyer programs will let you cash in miles for car rentals. If you are running short on funds, now is the time to check.
