New York is one of my favorite places. I'll be spotlighting ways to enjoy budget travel there from time to time.
Here are my Top 5 Views in New York (in reverse order):
5) George Washington Bridge as viewed from the north part of Riverside Park. Take the No. 1 subway to 116th St/Columbia University station and walk northwest to Riverside Drive. Enjoy all the views in this lovely park. Cost: Free
4) Walk the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. Take the subway to the Brooklyn Bridge/ City Hall stop. You'll love this stroll and the amazing views of the Manhattan skyline and the beautiful bridge. Cost: Free
3) Take a ride (or several) on the Staten Island Ferry. Catch the ferry at the lower tip of Manhattan (off the Whitehall/South Ferry subway stop). This is the best view you can get of the Statue of Liberty and riding the ferry is free. Make sure to go at night when the lit up Lady Liberty is truly inspiring. Cost: Free
2) Stroll through Central Park and rent a rowboat at The Lake. Lay back in your boat on the peaceful lake and be amazed at the towering skyscrapers. Cost: Park, Free. Rowboat: $10 for an hour.
1) No trip to New York is complete without a trip to the Empire State Building. It will cost you but this view keeps me going back and standing in line over and over again. It is beautiful in the daytime when you can see forever and it is amazing at night with the lights of the city. I like the view in the daytime a little bit better but nighttime can be a better use of time as you can go up as late as 1:15am. Cost: $20
