Airlines slash prices for the holidays

Market Watch reported yesterday on a jolly trend: airlines are slashing prices for the holidays. What gives? Many major airlines are doing away with their advance purchase rules for the holiday travel, which amounts to some tickets plummeting as much as 79%.

Make no mistake, you wont be skating across the country for New Years Eve for $50. "Holiday air travelers will continue to pay a premium over the current fare prices we see for the first two months of 2010," said Tom Parsons, chief executive of Bestfares.com, the website which originally reported the price slashing. "But with the lack of business travelers, the airlines have reduced their airfares substantially."

In general, prices seem to fall in one of four categories, according to the date you travel:
1 (cheapest): Dec. 25, Jan. The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. 4 (most expensive): Dec. 27, Jan. 2 and 3
