Bumpy roads and potholes may worsen for the next couple years, as Congress deals with a rapidly decreasing Highway Trust Fund and the aftershocks of a lingering recession.
Four U.S. Representatives from Texas discussed the healthcare bill and the Highway Trust Fund at the Sheraton Dallas on August 20. The important to budget travel is to approach in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Organizing and consuming our travel budget wisely is a concern for most families. Lowering spending and expenses, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!. The Dallas Regional Chamber hosted the 2009 Congressional Forum.
Congressman Ralph Hall, Congressman Joe Barton, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Congressman Pete Sessions spoke to DRC members and guests about legislation impacting North Texas.
Not surprisingly, much of the roughly 90 minutes was spent covering the pending healthcare bill. The representatives briefly touched on transportation issues in the state as well as the need for border and immigration reform.
When asked about the highway transportation program, Johnson said action may be delayed by 18 months.
In May, Congress was under pressure to complete the $450 billion highway bill before the fiscal year ends (September 30). The Highway Trust Fund, which pays for infrastructure repairs, is financed by a federal gas tax. There are concerns that the fund may run out of money later this year.
According to a press release from Congressman Kevin Brady, the fund is expected to run at an $8 billion deficit this year, and transportation experts tell lawmakers an additional $2.2 trillion over five years is needed to address the U.S. transportation system.
Its clear that the critical transportation needs of our communities and region will never be met until Washington finally gets serious about fixing the broken highway trust fund and re-thinks the way we invest in mobility in America, said Brady, who did not speak at the August 20 forum.
MarketWatch.com reports that Congressional leaders are discussing the possibility of extending unemployment benefits or the Highway Trust Fund.
In an editorial for The San Francisco Examiner, Michael Hough said Texas and some other states pay more money into the fund than they get back. Hough is director of the commerce, insurance and economic development and public safety and elections task forces at the American Legislative Exchange Council.
