Brian Johnson is a 37-year-old man from Alabama with Cystic Fibrosis. When he was diagnosed as a seven-year-old, doctors told his mother that Brian may not live past his teen years.
Thirty years later, Brian is determined to give back to the community that has supported him through the years. He and his wife, Christie, have always been about helping others. It wasnt until June of 2010, though, that this current dream of the Johnsons fully took shape.
Brian felt a calling that he and Christie could do more and just that quickly he knew what that would be: a motorcycle ride across the country raising awareness and money for Cystic Fibrosis.
There was only one problem Brian didnt own a motorcycle. In fact, Brian didnt even know how to ride! Not willing to turn down direction from God, Brian signed up for a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, got his motorcycle endorsement, and bought a Harley-Davidson Sportster.
Now the dream of CF Riders is well underway. On April 15th, 2011, Brian will take off from Birmingham, Alabama on a 10-week, 14,000-mile trip that will take him through 43 states on this Nationwide Ride for Life. Along the way Brian will meet with thousands of people to help spread the word about CF, attend CF rallies in some of the communities he will visit, and raise money to help families afflicted by CF.
Along the way, Brian is inviting those who want to ride along to do so and to contribute perhaps $10.00 for the ride. In this Five Rider Challenge, Brian will get five of his friends to ride that first leg of the Nationwide Ride for Life. He will challenge each of those five friends to invite five of their friends along and those five to invite five more and on and on. Brian is hoping for a huge crowd for that first leg as he rides to Jackson, Tennessee. In Jackson, the CF Riders will participate in a rally at Bumpus Harley-Davidson of Jackson. The owners of Bumpus HD in Jackson are Scott and Angie Bumpus; their son has CF.
Brian and I would like to invite you along for the ride, if not in person perhaps by following along with his story here on Examiner.com as he continues his preparations for the trip and for the actual trip itself. Over the next few weeks we will continue to update the readers with maps of the Nationwide Ride for Life, more background on Brian and Christies story, and a more information on exactly what Cystic Fibrosis is and the advancements in treatments being made every day.
After Brian gets on the road, we will hear from him about his adventures and the people he is meeting.
