Memphis is only 285 miles from St. Louis, but the city is distinctly different and southern through-and-through. If you only think of Memphis as the home of Elvis Presley and Graceland, then youve missed some of the other highlights of this languid town on the banks of the Mississippi.
Of course a trip to the 13.8-acre Graceland estate is a Memphis must, even if you only visit the front gates, where youll see graffiti and the names of visitors who have come from all over the world. If you elect to go on the guided tour of Graceland, youll get a peek at the inside of the pillared mansion that Elvis bought when he was only 22 years old. Elvis two airplanes as well as his car collection are included in the tour, which also offers a glimpse of the Meditation Garden where Elvis, his parents and grandmother are buried.
The place to be in the late afternoon is the Peabody Hotel, another famous Memphis landmark. Shortly after 4 p.m. the crowd starts to gather in the lobby cocktail bar near the Peabody fountain. At 5 p.m. just like clockwork the Peabody Ducks will leave the fountain where they have been swimming. and march away, returning the next day at 11 a.m. when they march to the fountain and begin their daily swim. This tradition has been going on for over 75 years, and is always a crowd-pleaser. If youre feeling extravagant you may want to book a room at the Peabody, but several other excellent, less expensive options are also available in the downtown area near many of the Memphis highlights.
Whenthe Peabody Duck March ends, head down Washburn Alley just across from the Peabody for some of the best ribs in Memphis or anywhere for that matter. The Rendezvous has been serving succulent hickory-smoked ribs since 1948. These are dry-rub and so popular that Rendezvous barbeque sauce and dry rub for ribs is sold separately for fans of this savory treat. When you enter the restaurant you can see the food being prepared in the open kitchen, and youll also see a variety of interesting collectibles displayed throughout this cozy cellar location.
After youve polished off a rack of ribs get ready to boogey. Beale Street, home of the Blues is only a short walk away. This is where W.C. Handy originated the Blues, and well-known artists like Muddy Waters, Bobby Blue Bland and B.B. King have wowed fans through the years. Today Beale Street is a lively entertainment district filled with clubs, restaurants and shops. On any warm spring evening its likely to be filled with throngs of people out to enjoy some the sounds of this famous street. When youre ready for a night cap, visit Pat OBriens or the Rum Boogie Caf for a perfect finale to a fun-filled day.
