Weve come upon the three-day weekend that working adults and students have looked forward to ever since Washingtons birthday back in February. The national break that re-introduces us to outdoor activities and officially kicks off the summer season: Memorial Day Weekend.
A lot of people feel obligated to cram in a mini vacation away from home during this time. The other night my friend Casey and I visited a mutual friend in University City who tried to sell us on the idea of driving three-plus hours in holiday traffic to Ocean City, Maryland. Just earlier today my brother and his friends accompanied the many other Philadelphians who are making the journey down the Jersey shore. I love the beach as much as anyone else, but with a forecast like this, shelling out money for gas and accommodations isntexactly desirable. While this weekend has proved to be a popular one for travel, there is something to be said for staying close to home.
Depending on what youre looking for this holiday, here are three options in and around the Philadelphia area:
1.)Memorial Service
What better way to spend a part of your weekend than by honoring the brave men and women who fought for our country? Philadelphias Laurel Hill Cemetery is conducting a traditional Decoration Day service in which special bronze markers are dedicated at the graves of veterans. Wreath-laying, speeches and honor guards enhance the ceremony, which honors all veterans who died defending the United States. The site is also the location of the first Memorial Day observance in Philadelphia.
Laurel Hill Cemetery's Memorial Day Observance will take place on Sunday, May 24 at 12:00 p.m. The cemetery is located at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. The event is free. http://www.theundergroundmuseum.org/.
2.)Fireworks
Sesame Place, located 30 minutes outside the city in Langhorne, is having its annual Memorial Day Weekend fireworks display. This Sunday starting at 9 p.m., guests who buy a regular admission price ticket are welcome to enjoy the show.

3.)Baseball
This Memorial Day, the Phillies are playing the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. Aside from being a decent match up, it's alsoone of Hatfields Dollar Dog Nights. You can try and score last minute tickets here or simply enjoy watchingthe game at home.

Of course, nothing compares to a simple Memorial Day cookout with family and friends. This weekend, don't fret over leaving the state and enjoy a low-key holiday. Sometimes all the fun you need is in your own backyard, and it's sans overpriced hotel rooms and stop-and-go traffic jams.
