While getting ready for an evening engagement, the mesmerizing view of 17th Street from the vintage decor Corner Room of the Oxford Hotel, urges me to stay in for the evening. A startling knock at the door breaks the spell of the view. Room service is there bearing a bucket with Pinot, and an envelope. Feels like your birthday opening the envelope to discover the gift card inside to the indie book store, Tattered Cover. What book should I get? Can I make it there tonight? Will the Pinot stay cold until I come back? Just a few questions that flurry in your head. No time to dawdle though, as you collect personal items off the antique desk and you're out the door.
The Deal
Travelling to visit a bookstore wouldn't be the first thought for many when planning a weekend getaway, but the Oxford Hotel in Denver has partnered with Tattered Cover to offer a luxurious experience for readers with the Book Lovers package.

The Hotel
Built in 1891, the Oxford Hotel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It resides in Denver's historic LoDo district, where towncar service from the hotel can take you to local hot spots. The hotel has French, English, and Victorian early 20th century decor throughout. Not much of the 21st century is evident in the lobby or hallways, until you spot the business center on the second floor, or until you get to your room, where flat screen TVs and Bose stereos can be found. Rooms are also have vintage decor, but none are alike. If you become a regular guest, they save your preferences and do their best to cater to them. A fully equipped fitness, spa, and salon are other modern features that reside next door along with the meeting and event spaces.
The Stories
Making your way through some of the winding hallways of the hotel, there seems to be a story around every turn, every location. The meeting and event spaces next door used to be horse stables. The Cruise Room where you get great martinis is said to be haunted by the ghost of a postman. Neighboring McCormick's restaurant had hidden access panels during Prohibition. Looking at the spa's treatment rooms, it's easy to see why rumors that the spa used to be brothel persist, especially with a back entrance that leads directly to the hotel's 2nd floor being right there. The history behind the hotel could be a trip unto itself.
The Book Store
Comfy chairs, free WiFi, a cafe, and endless bookshelves create the cozy atmosphere of the 35 year-old indie book store. No e-books readers or commercialization here. There's a purity about it. Only readers would understand when you enter a place like the Tattered Cover, you ARE the kid in a candy store. In every book there's another idea, another story, another destination for your imagination to explore. Inspiration comes along for the ride.
While there's so many exciting things to see and do in Denver, there's something about a good book, a great room, and the lights of the city in your window that make for a great evening.
