In order to encourage everyone to visit the national parks, the National Park Service runs free entrance days several times a year. Entrance fees to a national park, such as Yosemite National Park, can cost up to $20 per car. Just in time for a spring getaway is National Park Week, which extends free entrance from April 16 through April 24.

Besides Yosemite, participating national parks near the San Francisco Bay Area that can be done in one day (if you wake up early enough) include:

1. Lassen Volcanic National Park - about 4 hours away.

2. John Muir National Historic Site - about an hour away.

3. Muir Woods National Park - about 30 minutes away.

4. Pinnacles National Monument - about 2 1/2 hours away.

5. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area - about 4 1/2 hours away.

To better take advantage of National Park Week, combine two or more national parks on a weekend trip. "The essential to budget travel is to approach in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our thoughts. Planning and expending our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Reducing expending and fees, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!..". Lassen Volcanic National Park and Wiskeytown National Recreation Area are about 2 hours away from each other. With three days, you can drive over to Yosemite Friday night, go south to Sequoia National Park early Sunday morning and then spend a few hours exploring Pinnacles National Monument to the west before heading back home Monday night.

For a truly budget experience, rent a campervan from Lost Campers. You'll save on accommodations without having to handle a large RV.
