For those who travel and vacation via motorcycles, the scenic drive is not just a road to get from point A to point B but rather a major component of the trip. For the motorcyclist, the road to the destination is a part of the destination.
Previous articles have highlighted not only Great Motorcycle Roads according to this writer but also American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) great roads as chosen by the members of AMA. The sampling from those articles is just a small sampling of the great roads in the United States.
Within this great country there is a list of highways considered Americas Byways. The collection of roads currently includes 151 roads in 46 states including 120 National Scenic Byways, 31 All-American Roads, and 20 multi-State Byways. Each is designated as such by the United States Secretary of Transportation.
Roads listed as National Scenic Byways must contain at least one of six intrinsic qualities (historic, cultural, natural, scenic, recreational, or archaeological). Roads named as an All-American Road must possess multiple intrinsic qualities that are nationally significant and contain one-of-a-kind features that do not exist elsewhere. Both National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads are included under the umbrella term Americas Byways.
Americas Byways has an excellent website: www.byways.org. An interactive map on the landing page allows visitors to choose a state or region to explore. There is also an alphabetical list of the states and from there a list of the roads within each state listed as byways. Other great features of the website include personal stories from people who have explored the roads, pictures, and other roads listed as scenic within each state which have yet to earn the title Americas Byway.
A helpful pocket guide can also be ordered through this website with a fold out map and a listing of all the National Byways. This guide is free but it may take weeks to receive it once it is ordered. "The key to budget travel is to prepare ahead.
