At a time earlier in my youth I remember being considered a risk-taker. It was not because of any inclination of mine to ride a motorcycle, gamble money, change careers in midlife, or eat on North Avenue in Baltimore City. Although I have done all of those things.
No, the reason I was a risk-taker is because I liked to try new restaurants.
I know this behavior was risky, because whenever I suggest a new restaurant these days I am reminded that the children might not like it. It's not worth the risk, you see. Never mind the argument that at some point all restaurants that are now familiar to us were at some point tried for the first time.
Logic, in this case, is not relevant
Last weekend I found myself alone with my children on an 8-hour drive to North Carolina. They were starving for breakfast, but I kept them at bay until we came to a restaurant I have been wanting to try for 15 years: Aunt Sarah's Pancake House.
Aunt Sarah's is a chain located in Virginia and points South. This particular restaurant is located right off of I-95 in Ruther Glen, Virginia, attached to a Day's Inn. www.yelp.com/biz/aunt-sarahs-pancake-house-ruther-glen
And it was fine! First of all, it was lightning-fast. Our server had barely left the table after taking our order when the food arrived. My son loved his Western Omelet (with sausage instead of ham), the pancakes (with syrup in a keep-warm carafe) were enjoyed by the other children, the coffee was fresh and replenished frequently, and the children asked me why we never ate there before. Ha!
Aunt Sarah's has a rustic interior, also serves lunch and dinner, and sports a small convenience store with trinkets and candy. Think of it as a local competitor to Cracker Barrel.www.crackerbarrel.com/ or IHOP www.ihop.com/
