Perhaps the most common reason that people visit Peru is to experience the majesty of Machu Picchu. However, there are many ways to arrive at the summit of that awesome place. The easiest is to take a train, hike up a stone staircase for an hour and a half, and presto!- you're there.

Now that's all well and good, especially if you enjoy the company of retired persons and such. If you pride yourself on being young and adventurous, consider one of the five-day treks to the ruins and you may come away with a much more interesting story. But don't expect any coddling- over the course of five days you'll walk about 80 kilometers at altitudes up to 4500 meters. The terrain is so diverse that one night your group might sleep below a glacier, with a wind-chill factor so high that you refuse to pee for fear of leaving the tent, then the next night find yourself in what feels like a tropical jungle covered head to toe in sand fly bites. All nuisances aside, one important thing to be aware of is the high risk of contracting a diarrheal illness on such a camping adventure, even if using a water filter and chlorine purification tablets.

Whether it be cholera, giardia, or just good-old E. coli, things can get hairy when you are pooping literally every twenty minutes but you're hours away from any kind of medical care. Gatorade would be perfect here, but unfortunately it may be impossible to come by in this situation. Therefore, it's important to know how to make your own version.

Even if you were in the United States, there is no cure for cholera- the solution is to win the dehydration game and keep your electrolytes relatively stable. In this case, for every liter of (filtered) water, add one-half teaspoon salt, one teaspoon baking soda, eight teaspoons sugar, and eight ounces of orange juice. If you're really strapped for resources, as you may well be if you opt for the student-friendly budget tours, forego the baking soda and the orange juice. The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Considering and expending our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Reducing expending and costs, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel bill!. Sugar, salt, and water are what you really need- they've saved at least one life.
