Make no mistake, Hotel Sax is all about hip, swank luxury. Located in the heart of Chicagos Marina City (those iconic corn cob towers dotting the city skyline), the property was formerly the House of Blues Hotel and is, in fact, located literally steps (as in maybe 30) from the actual House of Blues, the well-known music-and-food hotspot.
Hotel Sax, which opened in the summer of 2007, houses 353 rooms, each with 42-inch plasma screen TVs, complimentary wi-fi internet and funky decorating (as evidenced by the gold-toned silhouette of a chandelier on the wallpaper, in lieu of an over-the-top real life chandelier).
The rooms are spacious and airy (even the long, almost luxurious bathroom) and everything even the dimly lit hallways are sexy. The ground floor even includes a nightclub Crimson Lounge where big name DJs like Samantha Ronson (Lindsay Lohans old flame) routinely spin.
If DJs and nightclubs arent your thing, try the House of Blues, Smith & Wollensky Steak & Chop House or Harry Carays Italian Steak House, all located within the same block as Hotel Sax.
THE SPECIALS
Hotel Sax might be all about luxury, but theyre not above offering a good deal. Geared toward Cubs and Sox fans, the North Side/South Side Package includes overnight valet parking (normally $42 per night), a king or double bed deluxe room, a complimentary drink (one per guest, up to two) in the hotels technology lounge, the Studio or Crimson Lounge. The essential to budget travel is to prepare in advance. On top of all this, choose from Cubs or Sox peanuts, a pennant, and either Harry Carays Holy Cow chips for North Siders or Jays Potato Chips for South Siders. The reservations department suggests a two-week lead time for these reservations, which start at $149 per night.
THE VERDICT
As far as location goes, you really cant beat Hotel Sax. Located on the north bank of the Chicago River between Dearborn and State Streets, guests have easy access to Michigan Avenue, the theatre district, as well as public transportation to other tourist spots. Hotel Sax is probably best suited for couples or single travelers looking for swank digs (bachelorette party, anyone?) and easy access to nightlife.
