Vicksburg sits at theconfluence of the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers.In 1863the Confederatesheld the city and the strategic advantage because they had access to both rivers for shipping and receiving supplies. The Union Army, led by Ulysses Grant, fought to gain control and access to the MIssissippi River and cut off the supply lines to the Confederacy. Before this fierce battle ended, more than 19,200 Confederate and Union soldiers had lost their lives.
Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates this famous siege that ended on July 4, 1863, one day after the Union victory at Gettysburg. The park contains the military cemetery where the Union and Confederate dead are buried. If you want to tour the battlefield by car you can rent an aduio tape or hire a professional guide.
