Avalon Harbor 28th annual Clean-up Dive

Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island
If you're a diver, you probably already know about this unique event held each year in Avalon Harbor on the island of Catalina. For one long morning, the normally busy harbor is closed to boat traffic and hundreds of divers clean up the bay of whatever has fallen or been thrown off of the many crafts that make a stop in the harbor. There are even prize categories for the most valuable item, most ridiculous, and so on.

A registration fee of $45 is required. All proceeds benefit theCatalina Conservancys Ocean Conservation projects and the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.Official registration has already closed, but there may be room for a few last-minute registrants if you can arrive by 7:30am Saturday morning at Wrigley Stage. Last year's event drew over 500, so watch out for all those flippers!

This isone more excuse to visit Catalina in the off-season, when prices are low and crowds are light. With many people cutting back on expensive long-distance travel this year, West Coast residents may find thata relatively easy and inexpensivetrip to Catalina by plane, helicopter, or express ferry may be just the ticket.
