In almost every article about flying these days, there is a mention of the high cost of fees that have come with air travel. It used to be that finding a good ticket price was all you had to worry about. However, with fees up (fees for a 2nd bag overseas, miscellaneous fees, fees for busy days and holidays, fares raised) and the number of flights down, flying costs much more than just the ticket price these days. So when considering travel plans for Thanksgiving, make sure you consider all of your transportation options.

In an MSNBC Travel article, they compare the cost of flights with train, car, and bus options. With gas down over 10 percent from this time last year, going by car may a good mode of transportation.

With those factors in mind, the article compares transportation options (bus, plane, car, and train) for a family of 4 from November 25 to 29 on three different travel plans - New York City to Boston, Atlanta to St. Louis, and LA to Portland (Note that I reviewed flights for 2 people from November 24 to November 29 in my review of airfare sites).

Driving is the cheapest option for all three travel plans while bus travel comes in second. However, time and distance are a factor when considering these options. Train travel was generally the next best option in terms of costs while air travel was the most expensive. The important to budget travel is to plan in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and spending our travel budget correctly is a concern for most families. Reducing consuming and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed accomplishment and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel expenses!. Not every travel option was available for each of these. Another option many may not have considered is an RV trip. While there are various costs associated with renting an RV, it may be another option for your family when traveling this holiday season.

In the day and age of rising costs for air travel, mounting fees, and a struggling economy, many may think outside the box and not take the usual transportation for Thanksgiving. For others, flying may be the most direct and only option, saving people time. With competition and the need to watch our spending, bus, trains, and car travel may be viable options for trips.

When considering all of these options, they present their own challenges in terms of time and costs. Such things as meals, fees, gas, inconveniences, travel comfort, and sleeping arrangements all factor into the true cost of a trip. However, explore your options, figure out what is best for your family, and make this a memorable (and cheaper) holiday time with your families!
