Whether you're escorting a freshman to college or sending a returning student back for fall term, there are a few tips that will save time and money.

Dorm rooms

In August, check into what is being provided by college housing. This varies from school to school and from dorm to dorm. You can save by not packing what's included and remembering what is not. Some things that always come in handy include an extra pillow, an extension cord and multi plug adaptor, an extra reading lamp, hangers. When having a look at your son's or daughter's room to see that everything's packed, remember that they have the final word on leaving behind uncool childhood memorabilia.

Computers and phones

For college students, electronics are no longer a frill, but a necessity. Budget ahead for purchases, repairs, upgrades, insurance. Call the school shop, as there are often some good deals there, such as a free printer with a laptop purchase. Manufacturers target the school shops to offer these deals.

Used books

The school shop is also handy for second-hand textbooks and course material that are not assigned as online documents. However, school shops are not the best place for standard stationery items. A hoodie or tee sporting the school logo is another story, but branded pens and notepads are a splurge.

Credit card perks

Register student cards for perks, frequent flyer miles, cash back deals. If parents plan to visit now and again, find out which hotels near campus are participating in your frequent flyer partnerships.

Advance planning

While it seems early, find out dates for homecoming, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Planning ahead will save on airline fares as busy dates and holidays approach. In the new year, start asking about graduation day. Hotels near campus start planning early for graduation, anticipating a sell-out, so those booking early will save. Get the hotel's cancellation policy in writing when you book, in case of a change of plans.

As 2012 is a presidential election year and November will be here before you blink, registering to vote is important. Students should make sure they are registered at their home address and have requested an absentee ballot, or they should re-register using their college address. Bring all possible identification if planning to register from the campus address. "The important to budget travel is to approach ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Considering and spending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Minimizing expending and costs, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding saving money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..".
