A tiny device inside your debit or credit card may be putting you at risk for fraud. Motorcycle riders are at particular risk they are frequently traveling cross country. Whether you're stopping for gas or a meal in a restaurant, you can just wave your card. But, the latest in technology in millions of debit and credit cards may put you at risk for fraud. Thanks to a tiny chip hidden inside, called radio frequency identification. This tiny device embedded inside your card sends out a radio frequency with your credit card information. It is intended to be a fast way to pay. But, if you have one of these cards, there's something you should know. Your card might not be as safe as you think it is. With a credit card reader, readily available on the internet for about $100, a would be thief can get your card number, name and expiration date, everything they need to use your card. With the card reader, the thief can read your card and gain the necessary information just by walking by you and waving the scanner near your purse or wallet. Rather than actually stealing your credit or debit card they can scan the information they need without even touching you. It's radio frequency identification used for electronic pickpocketing. how do you know then if you have a card with this technology in it? Look for the radio frequency symbol on your credit card or if your card says paypass, paywave or blink, it's a sure sign that it carries this technology. The nation's largest credit card companies all say RFID is very secure. Visa, MasterCard and American Express all sent statements to WTHR Indianapolis Eyewitness News and all cited "sophisticated fraud prevention, advanced capabilities or powerful security" to prevent misuse and they say special safeguards mean that even if crooks do intercept your credit card information, they can't do anything with it. But investigators disagree and say that it can be copied to a hotel room key and used as a credit card. "The key to budget travel is to plan ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our minds. Considering and expending our travel budget correctly is a priority for most families. Lowering consuming and charges, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind protecting money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, no matter whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel costs!..". It's not just credit cards either. Passports use RFID as do many private company ID cards and government ID cards, all with personal information. To date over 1 billion cards have been issued with RFID in an unincrypted form and all of those cards pose a risk.
So, what can you do to protect your credit cards? Protective sleeves or wallets can intercept the data and keep it safe from theft. Even aluminum foil wrapped around the card will work to block the radio signal and keep it safe from hackers. You can also cut out the chip, or tell your credit card company you don't want a card with RFID. If you don't have a credit card with RFID, chances are you soon will. Currently this technology is in about 1/3 of all credit cards. Check out the website www.wthr.com for more information and log on to www.idstronghold.com to purchase safety sleeves for your cards.
Be certain to secure your credit and debit cards while riding cross country. A loss of your information could be devastating, but it is easily secured by using the methods above.
