A short train ride from Madrid to the south brings one to Toledo. For the traveler (and the student) interested in out-of-the-way cities and smaller venues to visit, Toledo has much to offer.
The first order of the day, however, is shoes. While Toledo has trams and buses to get from the train station to the city itself (a walled city, by the way), it is a city made for walking. So please, wear your best walking shoes.
First up is the Alcazar. This building has a deep historical significance for many reasons and the building itself rests on the outer limits of the walled city. It is impressive just to look at, however, make sure that the alcazar is open and not under renovation prior to your trip. Start at the alcazar and tour the entire facility; there is a rich history there that will amaze even the non-historians. The stories about the siege during the Spanish Civil War will break your heart.
After the alcazar there are options. The best is to visit the catedral, again, just to see the ornate detail given to the history of Toledo, largely also a history of Spain itself. The Archbishop of Toledo has always been a historically significant figure and there is a room in the catedral that contains portraits of every single archbishop, in chronological sequence.
At this point it will likely be time to eat lunch and if there is a bad restaurant in Toledo it hasn't reared it's ugly head to anyone that's ever been there. Now, as the student traveler is well-versed in the beauty of the continental breakfast - especially the cafe con leche - then one would not have spent a lot on breakfast and can afford to splurge for lunch. For the love of all things great and small do so. The key to budget travel is to approach ahead. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Preparation and spending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Reducing consuming and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!. Toledo might be off the beaten path for the serious international traveler but the cuisine is magnificent, no matter the menu selection.
Do not try and make Toledo a one day excursion, there is simply too much history, culture, shopping (for those with a heftier budget - Toledo is known for its jewelry, it's armory, it's leather-goods and it's chocolate bonbons) and simply flat out interesting stuff for the dedicated tourist, historian, and student.
